Kim Brantner of Taylor County embodies the spirit, values, and lifelong impact of Iowa 4-H. Her 4-H career began in Adams County as a youth member exhibiting both static and livestock projects. Her involvement extended beyond 4-H participation; alongside her younger sister, Karen, the pair developed entrepreneurial skills by breeding and selling their own hogs and cattle. These early 4-H experiences helped shape the work ethic, leadership, responsibility, and commitment to service that would define Kim’s life and career.
After earning a degree in home economics from Iowa State University, Kim returned to southwest Iowa and began a remarkable 35-year career with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. She started as a part-time nutrition instructor and served in a variety of professional positions, including: Adams County Extension Home Economist, eight-county Consumer Management Home Economist, Union County Extension Home Economist, Union County Extension Director, Taylor County Extension Education Director, and ultimately Family Life Specialist in 2009 until her retirement.
Throughout her Extension career, Kim remained deeply connected to the mission of 4-H and youth development. Whether supporting county programming, mentoring youth and volunteers, or strengthening families and communities, she consistently exemplified the 4-H pledge to use one’s head, heart, hands, and health in service to others.
Kim’s contributions span across county lines and generations, making a lasting impact on Iowa 4-H and its mission.
