Nina Forsythe was a dedicated farm wife and mother of six who spent much of her life giving back to her community through volunteer work. Her deep involvement in 4-H included roles as a club leader, committee member, fair and achievement show judge, and advocate for youth and children with special needs.

In the mid-to-late 1950s, Nina started a girls’ 4-H club to provide opportunities for her daughters and other rural youth. Her goal each year was for every member to exhibit at the fair and experience the pride of earning a ribbon or being selected for the state fair.

Nina often hosted full-day workshops at her home, providing materials for those who couldn’t afford them. She taught practical skills such as making jam, shadow boxes, ice cream box wastebaskets, and lap back pillowcases. As a Master Gardener, she shared her knowledge of plants and horticulture and also helped establish the local farmers' market.

A strong believer in the 4-H pledge, Nina emphasized personal development through the four H’s:

·       Head: Learning life skills like cooking, preserving, home care, and especially record keeping.

·       Heart: Cultivating compassion and a desire to serve others.

·       Hands: Using skills to complete tasks, care for others, and present oneself with pride.

·       Health: Encouraging posture, hygiene, and self-care.

Nina also spent vacation time volunteering as a counselor at county and state 4-H camps. Her legacy is one of nurturing growth, building confidence, and living the 4-H values every day
