Mary’s lifelong dedication to 4-H, Extension, and her community reflects the true spirit of the organization. She was an active member of the Buffalo Boosters 4-H Club in Winnebago County. She participated in demonstrations, won the “Reading of the 4-H Creed” contest, and shared her musical talents by accompanying singers on piano during a Mother’s Tea.
A treasured friend and fellow 4-H’er once shared that Mary lived out not only the four H’s of 4-H, but four additional H’s throughout her life: Humble, Happy, Helpful, and Harmony. Those qualities have been evident in every stage of her service.
Mary later became the leader of the Howard Center Stars 4-H Club. Under her leadership, the club flourished with active members and strong communicators. She encouraged educational presentations and served as a communications judge for several years.
Mary also served as the Howard County Youth Coordinator and later served a term on the 4-H and Youth Committee. She continued supporting future generations by helping her grandchildren with their 4-H experiences, from sewing exhibits to beef projects. She also enjoyed working the ribbon table during static judging day, sharing in the joy of youth as they received their results.
Most recently, Mary shared her passion for quilting through Quilts of Valor, mentoring a 4-H member in selecting fabric, designing, piecing, and exhibiting a quilt that was ultimately presented to a veteran, exhibited at the Howard County Fair, and advanced to the Iowa State Fair.
