Hubert McElhinney has dedicated more than 70 years to the 4-H program, impacting generations of youth. A former 4-H member himself, Hubert later supported his two sons, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews through their 4-H experiences.
Hubert is well known for supplying bottle lambs and goats to young 4-H members, often donating the animals or purchasing them back. More importantly, he mentors youth throughout the entire process. He teaches grooming, feeding, showmanship, breeding practices, and livestock care while encouraging responsibility, confidence, and sportsmanship. He attends livestock shows to support the youth he mentors and is always available to help with medical concerns, feeding questions, grooming, and showing techniques. Hubert shares his years of knowledge and experience with every child he works with.
Hubert mentored Grace Davidson throughout her entire 4-H career, teaching her how to set a lamb's broken leg, treat cuts and fungus, manage prolapse issues, and develop a successful breeding program. Even when Grace competed against his own grandchildren, Hubert never showed favoritism and ensured both exhibitors had equal opportunities to succeed.
In addition to mentoring youth, Hubert has supported 4-H fundraisers for many years, contributing generously toward free enrollment opportunities for young members.
Hubert McElhinney's lifelong dedication, generosity, and mentorship have made a lasting impact on countless 4-H members and families throughout the community.
