Merlyn began his 4-H journey as a member of the Buckeye Hawkeyes before finishing his final years with the Alden Steady Workers 4-H Club. During his nine years in 4-H, he developed practical skills and a strong appreciation for hard work, leadership, and community involvement, values that shaped the rest of his life.
After high school, Merlyn attended Ellsworth Community College and later Iowa State University, where he earned a degree in Agricultural Education. He married his wife, Julia, and together they farmed and raised their three children: Tiffany, Amy, and Bradly.
Merlyn’s dedication to 4-H continued well beyond his youth years. He served as a volunteer leader for the Alden Steady Workers boys 4-H Club, mentored countless youth, and served on the Hardin County Youth Committee. Merlyn and Julia also chaperoned a 4-H senior trip to Chicago. His passion for livestock projects led him to serve more than 15 years as Swine Superintendent while also assisting in the show ring.
Since his first year as a 4-H member, Merlyn has attended every county fair, first as an exhibitor, then as a supportive parent, and now as a proud grandfather helping his five grandchildren continue the 4-H tradition. Through decades of volunteerism, mentorship, and faithful service, Merlyn has positively influenced generations of Hardin County youth. His lifelong commitment exemplifies the mission of 4-H. Whether working behind the scenes or supporting young exhibitors in the barn, Merlyn continues to leave a lasting impact on the program.
