When Carol was in fourth grade, she was invited to join 4-H but lacked interested in the all-girls club. She was a farm girl at heart. By junior high, that changed when she joined the Volga Valley Feeders 4-H Club, where boys and girls participated together. There, Carol found her passion. She showed Ayrshire dairy cattle, earning champion honors at the county fair, and also completed a variety of non-livestock projects.
After graduating high school, Carol attended NICC to study dairy herd management. She later returned home to farm with her dad and became a leader of the Volga Valley Feeders 4-H Club. During this time, she met her husband, Greg. Although Greg had not been involved in 4-H growing up, he quickly embraced it alongside Carol. Married in 1989, they knew 4-H and the Clayton County Fair would be central to their family. Their sons, Jarrett and Kenny, both joined 4-H at a young age through the Marion Happy Hustlers. Carol once again stepped into a leadership role, and both boys remained active in 4-H through high school.
The Clayton County Fair is especially meaningful to the Johnson family, serving as a yearly reunion with friends old and new. Greg, Carol, and their son Kenny all serve on the Fair Board. Carol is always ready to help whether checking in animals, assisting with shows, or announcing at the livestock auction.
Their behind-the-scenes dedication helps make the fair a success year after year. In 2020, Carol was honored as the Clayton County 4-H Alumni Member, recognizing her lifelong commitment and impact. The Johnson family continues to support the 4-H program and the Clayton County Fair.
