Doug and Laurie Doran have devoted more than five decades to strengthening 4‑H, Extension, and their community through leadership, mentorship, and lifelong service. Their involvement began as Boone County 4-H youth. Doug’s upbringing on a farm fueled his passion for livestock and agriculture, while Laurie’s interests in sewing, clothing, and baking highlighted the importance of static exhibits within the 4‑H.

Though they lived only miles apart, it was 4‑H that brought them together during a Citizenship Washington, D.C., trip in 1973. They married in 1976 and built their life on the family farm, raising six children with 4‑H woven into their daily lives. Laurie ensured their children and others had well-rounded experiences by encouraging participation in both livestock and static exhibits, fostering confidence, creativity, and practical life skills.

Laurie’s contributions to 4‑H and Extension have been extensive. She served as a dedicated leader of the Amaqua Warriors, a youth committee member, and a mentor to countless young people. She created an environment where youth felt supported and empowered to grow in leadership and responsibility. Doug’s impact, though often behind the scenes, has been equally significant. As a lifelong farmer, he mentored youth in livestock care, record keeping, sportsmanship, and the value of hard work, always willing to lend his time and knowledge. Together, Doug and Laurie have strengthened their community through service, example, and continued commitment, including providing an annual scholarship in Laurie’s name. Their legacy reflects the true spirit of 4-H.
