Dave Abildtrup and his daughter Sara Bolinger of Creston are Union County’s 2025 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees, recognized for their decades of dedication to supporting 4-H youth. Together, they’ve helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars through the Union County 4-H livestock auction, which began over 40 years ago.
Though Dave wasn’t a 4-H member himself, he and his wife Barb served as 4-H leaders while their children were active. In the 1980s, Dave joined the livestock sale committee, working to increase premiums for youth by gathering donations from local businesses and individuals. He also served on the county fair sheep committee for 10 years and the Extension Council for three.
Sara, a former 4-H’er and club officer, began clerking the livestock sale after graduation. In 2009, she took over Dave’s role on the sale committee and has continued fundraising efforts ever since. In 2011, she joined the Union County 4-H Foundation Endowment Committee, computerized its accounts, and now serves as treasurer.
Sara is also a dedicated fair volunteer—announcing livestock shows, judging Clover Kid showcases, and interviewing first-year 4-H scholarship applicants. Her efforts ensure youth feel supported and celebrated.
Beyond 4-H, Dave is active in Kiwanis and Salem Lutheran Church. Now retired, he and Barb enjoy traveling and life in rural Union County. Sara and her husband Bill farm and run a small campground.
Union County is proud to honor Dave and Sara for their unwavering commitment to 4-H and the positive impact they’ve made on generations of youth.
