Bill Couser, a farmer, cattleman, and ag-energy entrepreneur, credits his 4-H experiences in Story County as foundational to his family, career, and business. As a 4-H member in the 1960s, his beef cattle projects instilled values of animal care and environmental stewardship. Leadership roles in County Council and Builders Club shaped his commitment to community involvement.
Bill and his wife Nancy raised two sons who were active in 4-H while Bill served as a volunteer club leader. He also served on the Story County 4-H Youth Council and Extension Council, provided space and equipment for beef projects, and acted as beef superintendent at the county fair. Encouraged by Extension staff during his youth, Bill has remained a strong supporter of Story County 4-H.
Couser Cattle feeds 5,200 head and produces seed corn and soybeans. Bill chaired the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and received the Environmental Stewardship Award. He regularly hosts visitors—from students to international guests—at his farm, often preparing meals himself, including for RAGBRAI, with proceeds supporting local food pantries and scholarships.
Bill played a key role in founding Lincolnway Energy, producing ethanol and co-products, and is involved with Summit Carbon Solutions to support ethanol sustainability. With his son Tim, he established a 220-acre Modern Ag Farm to demonstrate soil health, cover crops, bee habitats, and sustainable practices.
As a Global Farmer Network board member, Bill has traveled internationally to promote trade and sustainable agriculture. He also serves on numerous local and state boards, advocating for agriculture, ethanol, and rural development. His leadership and innovation continue to shape the future of agriculture and 4-H.
