Rick Sletten’s journey with 4-H began at age 10 as a member of the Liberty Straight Shooters 4-H Club, later continuing with the East Cedar 4-H Club after moving near Osage. What started as a childhood experience grew into a lifelong commitment to youth development and community service.

When Rick’s children joined 4-H, he was invited to serve on the youth committee—a role he embraced for 19 years. He found deep fulfillment in guiding his children and other youth through their projects, seeing each one as an opportunity to instill values and build character. “It was a joy to watch kids develop in their projects and the skills they learned along the way,” he reflects.

Rick also served on the ribbon auction committee, helping young exhibitors earn funds to sustain their projects. He took pride in photographing livestock for auction packets before passing the camera to a professional so he could focus on organizing materials.

Among his favorite memories are those spent with Clover Kids. Their creativity and curiosity brought him joy, and he cherished helping youth navigate challenges like meeting deadlines, always offering encouragement and support.

To Rick, 4-H and Clover Kids are more than programs—they’re vital experiences that teach collaboration, responsibility, and appreciation for agriculture. His legacy is one of quiet leadership, heartfelt service, and a deep belief in the power of youth to shape a better future. Rick Sletten’s contributions have left a lasting impact on Mitchell County 4-H and the lives of countless young people.
