Patty Vestal’s lifelong dedication to 4-H began in West Pottawattamie County, where she was one of nine siblings actively involved in the program. After moving to Mills County, she became a home improvement leader for the Indian Deerettes and later a longtime club leader. Patty and her husband, Charlie even chaperoned nearly 70 teens to Washington D.C. for Citizenship Washington Focus in 1979.
As co-leader of the Busy Bees 4-H Club, Patty hosted themed events and welcomed new members—often inviting students while serving lunch at Nishna Valley Schools. She opened her home for workshops, offered rides, and ensured every child felt included. Her commitment extended to serving as the county static superintendent, where she supported both judges and exhibitors with calm reassurance.
Beyond Mills County, Patty judged county fairs across southwest Iowa, always taking time to listen and encourage 4-Hers. She celebrated learning and growth, embodying the spirit of 4-H in every interaction.
One of her favorite traditions was visiting the Iowa State Fair, always starting at the 4-H exhibit building—a ritual she lovingly shared with her children and grandchildren.
Patty Vestal’s legacy is one of service, inclusion, and unwavering support for youth. Her hands were always busy helping others, and her heart was always with 4-H. She lived the 4-H pledge fully, shaping countless lives through her dedication and kindness.
