When he recited the 4-H Pledge as a young member, this year’s Louisa County 4-H Hall of Fame inductee clearly took to heart the line about pledging his “hands to larger service.” Scott Heater has spent a lifetime living out that promise through his unwavering dedication to youth, agriculture, and his community.
Scott was an active 4-H’er, especially involved in the Louisa County and Regional 4-H Softball competitions. In fact, a 1973 Wapello Republican article notes that at just 17, he was voted coach of the Wapello Willing Workers 4-H Softball Team. His love for the game continued well beyond 4-H, playing adult league ball with his wife and coaching youth teams—even before his own children participated.
Scott went on to serve as a longtime superintendent at the Louisa County Fair. He embraced new technology, learning retinal scanning for livestock ID and volunteering his time across multiple counties, even training others in the process. He also served on the ISU Extension and Outreach Council, including time as chair, and was a dedicated member of the Louisa County Conservation Board, contributing to both public and personal conservation efforts.
A lifelong cattleman, Scott has served at local, state, and national levels. He continues to volunteer with the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show and is known for his skills at the grill. His service with the Louisa County Farm Bureau includes supporting the county fair, Ag Safety Day, Ag in the Classroom, and more.
The Louisa County Extension Council is proud to recognize Scott Heater as the 2025 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee—thank you, Scott, for being a “Willing Worker” long after your 4-H days ended.
