Dennis began his involvement in 4-H in the 1970s as a member of the Corwin Go Getters club.  From 1996 to 2007, he worked with his daughters and from 2015 to present, his grandchildren with their various 4-H projects, Pen of Three cattle, and rabbits.

In August of 2009, he became a member of the Ida County 4-H Committee, where he holds the seat as Vice President and is still an active member today.

Around the same time, he became a Pen of Three Cattle Superintendent and herdsmanship judge, where he played a crucial role in helping the cattle program excel and evolve into what it is today.  As a herdsmanship judge, he has the privilege of traveling to the 4-Her's facilities, where the cattle are housed, to ask the kids questions about their project and their involvement in the process. He especially enjoys watching from year to year as the kids improve in their knowledge and grow in the project. He is still an active member of the team today.

Throughout his many years of involvement with the 4-H program, he has volunteered his time and equipment for setting up, taking down, and cleaning the animal pens each year. He also works the cattle weigh-in in December, as well as the weigh-in and ultrasound before the show in July.  During the show he helps bring the Pens of Three to the show ring for the Judge, and on sale day, he helps bring them back to the show ring for the Buyers. After all is said and done on sale day, he then helps load all of the sold Pens of Three onto semi pots headed for the packer.
