Earl and Lesa Vold have been dedicated and influential volunteers in the Hamilton County 4-H program since 2004, especially within the horse project area. Their journey began by helping with the county’s weekly riding clinics, providing essential practice opportunities for 4-H youth preparing for the county fair. They quickly became essential figures in the horse program, offering consistent support and guidance at both clinics and the county fair horse show.
When the previous horse program leader stepped down, Earl and Lesa stepped in to lead the fair show, bringing steady leadership and a strong sense of community. While they eventually passed the weekly clinic responsibilities to a new generation of horse program graduates, they continued to volunteer and support youth in meaningful ways.
One of the most rewarding aspects of their service was working alongside their daughter, Cassaundra, who went from participant to adult volunteer. Lesa also helped coach a team for the state 4-H Horse Judging Contest and supported youth participation in the Iowa Horse Youth Jamboree, encouraging deeper learning and growth beyond the show ring.
Earl and Lesa have built lasting relationships with 4-H’ers, parents, volunteers, and the fair board. They’ve watched many young riders grow into confident adults, some even pursuing equine careers. Favorite memories include the creative horse costume contest and the crowd-favorite parent/alumni egg and spoon race.
Their years of dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm have left an indelible mark on Hamilton County’s 4-H horse program, making it a welcoming and supportive space for all involved.
