Unimaginable loss inspired Randy and Lora Lea Owen to give back in powerful ways.
Lora Lea (Gubser) Owen grew up in a 4-H family in Rock Port, Missouri, where her parents helped lead the Northern Highlighters 4-H Club. As a member, she learned communication skills, responsibility, and the importance of community.
After marrying Randy in 1995, Lora Lea introduced him to 4-H when he helped her brother with livestock projects. Their sons, Connor (born in 2000) and Cameron (2002), carried on the tradition by joining the Washington P.E.P. 4-H Club. Lora Lea became a club leader and Randy volunteered, especially in STEM areas. The family loved preparing exhibits and attending the county fair.
Connor and Cameron were exemplary 4-H’ers—Connor with cattle and Cameron with sheep—both eager to learn and grow.
In 2016, Cameron tragically passed away in an ATV accident at just 14. The 4-H community rallied around the Owens in their grief, offering comfort and connection. To honor Cam’s memory, they established a scholarship and the Cameron Owen Enthusiasm Award, recognizing a 4-H’er who reflects Cam’s all-in attitude, joy, and effort.
Randy and Lora Lea have continued giving to 4-H, including chaperoning the 2017 Citizenship Washington Focus trip. Randy also serves on the Fremont County Extension Council.
Lora Lea, a special education teacher in Hamburg, and Randy, a technician at Keim Farm Equipment, continue to make their home near Hamburg. As Lora Lea says, “We are part of them, and they are part of us.”
