Des Moines County proudly welcomes Randy and Sherlyn Beckman as their 2025 Hall of Fame honorees—two individuals whose dedication, leadership, and passion have left a lasting mark on 4-H and the Iowa fair community.
Sherlyn’s 4-H journey began after marrying her high school sweetheart and moving to the countryside, where she discovered a deep passion for youth development and community service. Randy, on the other hand, has 4-H in his roots, beginning as a member of the Sperry Sodbusters 4-H Club, where he exhibited cattle and worked at the original Lemonade Stand at the Des Moines County Fair.
In 1992, Randy returned to the Sodbusters as a volunteer leader. By 1994, he joined the Des Moines County Fair Board, a role he’s held for over 30 years. That same year, he and Sherlyn launched the first Clover Kids club in Des Moines County for pre-4-H-aged youth. One of the earliest such programs in the state, they led it for a decade, helping lay the foundation for what is now a statewide initiative.
In 1996, Sherlyn became Secretary/Manager of the Des Moines County Fair, serving with distinction for 17 years. Under her leadership, the fair flourished as a community cornerstone.
Their children continued the tradition, excelling in livestock competitions and later becoming 4-H leaders themselves. Randy also served on the Association of Iowa Fairs Board for 12 years, including time as President.
With their grandchildren now beginning their 4-H journeys, the Beckmans' legacy of service, leadership, and 4-H spirit will live on for generations.
