It’s hard to describe a life of service without mentioning Annette Boeck. Raised in 4-H, Annette is the daughter of Maclyn LaRue, a longtime extension director. She and her four siblings were all active members, and Annette’s first club was the Atomic Stars. She especially enjoyed sewing and clothing & fashion projects, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to 4-H and community service.

4-H became a springboard for Annette’s life and career. She met her husband, Larry Boeck—a fellow 4-H member—at a Crawford County Fair dance. After earning a degree in Home Economics from Iowa State University, she and Larry returned to Denison to raise their three children on the family farm. Annette began judging 4-H projects early in her parenting years, often working long summer days at county fairs with a fan and a smile.

In 1985, Annette joined Dennis and Mary Koenig as a leader of the Good Handy Helpers 4-H Club. She led for 15 years, encouraging members to explore all project areas, hosting write-up and record book workshops, and mentoring with patience and enthusiasm. Even after stepping down as a leader in 2000, she continued supporting youth through sewing clinics and fashion events until 2015.

Annette’s legacy now lives on through her grandchildren—11 of her 12 have joined 4-H, and seven remain active members. She continues to mentor and cheer them on in their projects.

In 2025, Annette will mark her 51st year as a 4-H judge, returning once again to the fairgrounds to support a program and community she’s loved for decades.
