Trent and Leslie Henkes of Luana have been lifelong supporters of 4-H, both as youth and adults. Trent was active in Clayton County 4-H, where his passion for dairy judging began after his team won the state contest in his first year. While attending Iowa State, he coached the county dairy judging team, leading them to back-to-back state championships in 1985 and 1986.
When their children became involved, Trent and Leslie resumed coaching, guiding four more senior champion teams and two junior winners. They also coached the county Dairy Quiz Bowl team and have served as dairy superintendents at the county fair for over 34 years. Trent co-founded the Clayton County Kiddie Calf Show in 1981, and the couple supported the event for more than three decades.
Leslie joined 4-H at age 10 in Illinois, where she was active in both agriculture and home economics clubs. Her projects included registered Guernsey cattle, poultry, food and nutrition, clothing, and home improvement. She held leadership roles in her clubs and has since judged county fair exhibits across many categories. Leslie has also reviewed countless 4-H record books and project award applications.
The Henkes have served as 4-H leaders, judged Kiddie Calf Shows and dairy contests, and hosted numerous judging practices on their farm. Trent currently serves as president of the Clayton County Extension Council, and both are founding members of the 4-H Foundation Board.
Trent and Leslie are the proud parents of Leah and Matt, both ISU grads and 4-H alumni. Their grandson, Leigh, recently became the fourth generation to show dairy cattle in 4-H, proudly continuing a family legacy rooted in dedication to youth and agriculture.
