Dr. Randy Groth grew up on a farm near Elma and developed a strong interest in animals early on. After graduating from Riceville High School, he earned a biology degree with a chemistry minor from Wartburg College, then pursued veterinary medicine at Iowa State University. He interned with Dr. Al VanArkel of Plainfield Veterinary Service and joined the practice after graduating in 1981.
Randy has been a vital supporter of the Bremer County Fair, helping with livestock check-ins for several years, often arriving by 5:30 A.M. and returning in the evening for additional shifts. He also served as the fair’s on-call veterinarian, addressing any animal health concerns throughout the week. Beyond the fair, he supports livestock events at the Waverly Sale Barn and has long assisted with private cattle sales. Plainfield-Clarksville Veterinary Services, where Randy works, has also sponsored awards like trophies and belt buckles for champion animals.
In addition to his veterinary work, Randy coached his daughters' softball teams and enjoyed supporting his children in their sports and music activities. Today, he cheers on his grandchildren. A dedicated member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, he has served as council president and helps with fundraisers like the church’s scrap metal drive. His pastor once described him as “a man who could do all things well.”
Randy and his wife, Jo, have four children and eight grandchildren. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, often starting his plants from seed—a favorite hobby that reflects his patient, nurturing spirit.
