Larry Kester, a lifelong Adams County resident, developed a passion for livestock as a child while raising sheep and calves for the Adams County Fair. A proud 7-year member of the Jasper Specialist 4-H club, his early experiences in agriculture laid the foundation for a lifetime of dedication to farming and youth development. After graduating from Corning High School, Larry farmed with his father before joining Red Star Mill, eventually becoming its manager in 1983 and owner in 2000. He expanded the business, now Red Star Feeds, LLC, to serve livestock producers across Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri. In 2024, he and his company were recognized by the Iowa Secretary of State for their trusted service.
Larry is deeply committed to giving back to his community. He has served on the ACEDC Board of Directors, the Agricultural Board, and the Rural Development Board, and played a key role in launching the Hooked On Livestock Project. Over the past 52 years, he has mentored 4-H members from 13 counties, teaching livestock care, business skills, and record keeping, while supporting youth during fair sales and year-round activities.
He is also a long-time participant in the School to Work Program and regularly visits elementary classrooms to teach students about feed production and animal care. At the Adams County Fair, Larry is a familiar face—always ready to lend a hand.
Larry, his wife Denise, and their son Brennan operate a cow-calf farm. With a shared 4-H legacy, the Kester family remains devoted to agriculture, education, and building future generations of farm leaders.
