Mark Winslow grew up in Corydon in a 4-H family: his sisters were all 4-H members, and his mother was a 4-H leader. During the county fair, they all virtually lived at the fairgrounds. When Mark joined 4-H, he participated in woodworking and electronics projects.
After high school, Mark left Iowa and created a cable TV company, which took him nationwide, primarily to Colorado. There he met his wife, Jeanne. Eventually, they moved back to Wayne County, where Mark worked for Voltmaster Batteries and began farming, making Wayne County his home once again.
When he returned to farm in rural Iowa, Mark was reminded of how helpful ISU Extension and Outreach is and how valuable 4-H is. He became a tremendous supporter of 4-H and its members–and of the county fair. Once more, he spends county fair week at the fairgrounds, cleaning up, taking tickets, setting up facilities, and doing whatever needs to be done. (And eating fair food, too!) One of the things he enjoys most is seeing what the county 4-H members have accomplished throughout the year.
Mark often provides bottle calves for members to raise. He offers advice and checks on their progress. He always attends the sale at the fair and often buys the 4-H animals. He is especially good about reaching out to encourage and inspire newer members. Mark has also been a Wayne County Extension Council member since 2014. While on Council, he has been a tremendous help in tackling any issues and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Mark is semi-retired but works harder than ever. He is very involved in the community and proud to be a part of it.
