Melva Berkland’s journey with 4-H began long before she became the 4-H Communications Specialist. As a 10-year 4-H member in Scott County, Melva developed a deep connection to the program, one that would influence her career. Even today, she still treasures her 4-H record book.
Melva’s professional contributions to 4-H began when she joined the Iowa State University Extension Communications unit. During her tenure supporting 4-H, Melva was responsible for crafting press releases, managing 4-H publications, and leading the production of educational materials.
A notable project that Melva was involved in was the Club Task Force initiative. As a member of the Marketing Committee, she worked closely with counties across Iowa, teaching them how to develop and implement effective marketing plans. Her efforts helped to elevate the visibility of 4-H at the local level, ensuring that the program continued to thrive and attract new members.
Although Melva retired in 1999, her contributions to 4-H and the ISU community are still remembered and celebrated today.
Melva met her husband, William, "Bill" when they were students at Iowa State University. They were married for 48 years before Bill passed away in 2011 on their wedding anniversary. They have one son, Ross.
