Randy and Melody Hiscocks of Britt are long-time 4-H and fair volunteers. Randy has been on the Hancock County District Fair Board since 2009 and was part of the Hancock County Extension Council for many years.
Melody was a 4-H club leader for 15 years and now volunteers in the fair office during the county fair. To this day, after being involved for almost 43 years, both of them are very engaged in the Iowa State Fair draft horse show.
One of their fondest memories of being involved with 4-H and the community is watching all the generations go through showing static and livestock projects at the county fair. They love to see the new generations come together to learn the ins and outs of the county fair. Randy stated, “I have seen the fair go up, go down, and right now, we are at an all-time high because of the community; that is a highlight of my involvement!”
When asked why they are still working with ISU Extension and Outreach and the fair today, they stated, “Our ‘why’ is seeing the excitement and dedication put into all of the areas of the fair by the 4-H and FFA exhibitors along with community members.”
Randy and Melody give the following advice to 4-H individuals and families: “[4-H] gives you a tremendous background, opens numerous doors, and gives you several opportunities. 4-H is overall a tremendous opportunity for everybody.” The Hiscocks’ passion has shown through their dedication to the 4-H program and the county fair.
