Wayne County is pleased to recognize Dr. Gary and Georgia Runyon as the 2023 inductees into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. Gary and Georgia are life-long Iowans. The Runyons grew up on their respective family farms in Webster County and were high school sweethearts, marrying in 1963. Gary went on to attend veterinary school at ISU, graduating in 1967, after which they moved to Wayne County and have called it home for over fifty years.
Georgia was active in girls 4-H and was a member of the Burnside Beavers. During her time in 4-H, she prepared many projects for the Webster County Fair. Once Doc and Georgia had children old enough to participate in 4-H, they became co-leaders of their local club, the Jackson Howard Stockman Farmers. They served in this role for nearly a decade.
They helped their children with their 4-H projects. When all three children were in 4-H simultaneously, this meant choosing six steers from the family’s herd. They also helped with projects in photography, cooking, and sewing.
The Runyons have made many other contributions to their community. Gary served on the Wayne County Hospital Board for nearly 40 years, and Georgia has been involved with the Wayne County Development Corporation, the Hospital Auxiliary, PTA, and PEO. They belong to the Methodist church.
Dr. Runyon retired from his veterinary practice in 2008 and turned his attention to the cow-calf operation he and Georgia had built together. In addition to 150 head of cattle, they raise corn, soybeans, and alfalfa hay. With their son Tim and grandson Connor, they continue to enjoy the simple pleasures and overcome the challenges that come with farm life and take great pride in their family, which includes nine grandchildren and a sweet great-granddaughter. The Runyons are proud to call Wayne County their home and are very grateful for this wonderful honor.
