Kris Henneman is this year’s Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee from Fremont County. Squid, as everyone knows him, was a member of the Waubonsie Trailblazers 4-H Club in high school. He loved showing cattle and hogs and was a proud recipient of the Carl McIntyre Savings Bond as the Grand Champion Senior Swine Showman.
Upon graduating from high school, he attended Northwest Missouri State University majoring in Animal Science and Ag Business. Following college, he returned to Fremont County where he added farming to the cow-calf operation he had established in high school. In addition to his ag ventures, he is also the Superintendent of the Fremont County Golf Course.
Not long after returning to his home community, Squid joined the Fremont County Fair Association. He was a member of the Fair Board for 12 years and served as chair for 5 years. Some accomplishments during that time include installation of a new stage, an open-air horse arena, and the fundraising and planning for a major building renovation project.
Squid is also a regular buyer at the annual 4-H and FFA Premium Sale, which helps to ensure that individual members have the means to invest in their livestock projects. Additionally, he is willing to help any youth improve their showmanship skills through coaching and hands-on learning.
Squid’s proudest 4-H accomplishment is helping his nieces and nephew get involved in livestock production and exhibition of sheep, beef, and swine. He hopes they will have the same positive experiences he had including making lots of friends, having fun, and discovering a potential career path in agriculture.
