Nancy Demro was a lifelong supporter of 4-H. Growing up in Chickasaw County, she was an active member of the Peppy Pixies 4-H Club, which was led by her mother and her aunt, a testament to the strong family ties to 4-H. Nancy worked hard on projects for the fair every year including sewing, gardening, baking and visual arts projects. She was determined to earn a coveted trip to the Iowa State Fair or Cattle Congress – which she did – motivating her to continue developing and working on new projects year after year.
As a mother of three active 4-H’ers, Nancy was a driving force behind their achievements. She had high expectations and supported her kids in all of their 4-H pursuits at the club, county, state, and national levels. No one was more proud to see a pink or purple ribbon than Nancy. The Demro family was awarded the Chickasaw County 4-H Family of the Year Award in 1996 which is an honor that Nancy was extremely proud of because it represented many years of commitment, service, leadership, and achievement. In her later years, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren continue the family 4-H tradition.
Nancy gave her time, talents, and treasure to the Chickasaw County 4-H program by serving on the 4-H Board, volunteering for a variety of committees, and evaluating record books. She had a very high bar for quality and detail in record books which usually led to some spirited debates when her own kids were working on their record books.
Upon her passing, the family directed memorials to the Chickasaw County 4-H program. Nancy’s memorial money is being used to purchase much needed equipment to modernize display booths for Honorable Mention and State Fair winning projects along with benches for seating while viewing the winning projects.
