Paul and Margery have been to pretty much every Taylor County Fair for the last 50 years, since they moved back to Iowa in 1970. Paul’s involvement goes back to the 1940s, when he began showing livestock at the age of 10 or 11 as a member of the Ross Jackson Producers 4-H club.
Paul’s Holstein cow Clarabelll, purchased from the Clarinda Mental Health Institute, was champion dairy cow at the fair for a few years running, and his Yorkshire hogs were grand champion and reserve champion at the fair. Paul’s 4-H career culminated in having the grand champion 4-H market barrow at the Iowa State Fair, finishing second in the state in hog judging, giving a blue ribbon presentation on farrowing stalls, and being vice president of the state 4-H council.
Paul and Margery’s five children were all active in 4-H. For the last few decades, Paul and Margery have been active supporters at the 4-H fair sale auction. They’ve bought calves, hogs, sheep, goats, and chickens and have often been on the top ten buyers list.
