Garnet Gertsma, age 83, of Lynnville has been active in the Lynnville-Sully community for many years. She and her husband David live on a farm near Lynnville where they raised 3 children.Garnet Gertsma

From 1968-1981 she was a 4-H leader for the Sugar Creek Peppy Pals girls club. At the time the Sugar Creek club was split into two groups, a boys club and a girls club.  They all meet together for a meal at the old Searsboro school and then divided into their separate groups for the meeting part.  Garnet and David's children were all active in 4-H, involved in a lot of different 4-H activities. Even their grandchildren were active in 4-H when growing up.

After giving up the leadership role of the Sugar Creek club she then served on the Poweshiek County Extension Board for three years.

Garnet is a member of the Lynnville Friends Church where she has been active on many committees including the nominating committee, service committee, pastoral search committee, kitchen remodeling committee, 150th Anniversary Committee and cradle roll.  For several years she was the Sunday School Superintendent for the elementary aged kids. She is currently part of the church's USFW women's group where she at one time served as president.  In 1961 she joined the Lynnville Women's Club which she is currently still an active member.  While in Women's Club she has held many club and county offices.

Garnet has served in other capacities in the community including having an intricate role in the planning of the 125th Lynnville Celebration.  Garnet was also actively involved in the local cub scouts group.

To this day you can still find Garnet enjoying the Poweshiek County Fair where she still submits entries in the open classes particularly in the photo division.
