The 2019 Des Moines County Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee has been involved in 4-H for many years; as a 4-H member, 4-H leader, 4-H parent, and now a 4-H grandparent.
Dave Holstein is a 1965 graduate of Mediapolis High School and was an 8 year member of the Junior Judges 4-H club exhibiting steers and heifers at the county and state levels. Dave takes pride in the fact he received a purple ribbon 7 out of the 8 years in rate of gain, with his cattle, and that he was able to secure a Showmanship recognition.
His most memorable moment in 4-H was receiving 4th place with his Angus heifer at the Iowa State Fair while competing against 27 head of cattle in his class.
Dave served as a 4-H leader for his son’s Todd and Travis, who successfully exhibited cattle at the county fair and state fair level. As an active member of the Des Moines County Cattlemen’s Association, Dave spent many hours volunteering his time at fair set up days and at those wonderful early morning weigh-ins.
Dave’s passion for 4-H and love of cattle not only carried on to his boys, but has been passed on to his grandchildren: Parker, Gavin, Reese, and Grace. All four have shown bucket bottle calves, market steers, and breeding heifers with much success! There is never a county fair beef show that you will not find Dave on the top row of the bleachers in support of his grandchildren.
Dave had seen a lot of change in the 4-H program over the years. One important change was when the Des Moines County fairgrounds moved from Agency Street (Perkins Restaurant) in Burlington, to the grounds of Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. Other changes have been the implementation of the bucket bottle calf, kid goat, and lamb programs. The implementation of the Southeast Iowa Final Drive and the Southeast Iowa Showdown, showcasing the champions from multiple counties, is something Dave was pleasantly surprised to see.
It is with great pleasure we recognize this year’s inductee to the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame from Des Moines County…David Holsteen.
