Richard Cheney has been active in the Poweshiek County 4-H programs in various roles for years. These roles include as a parent, leader, grandfather, and Poweshiek County Extension council member. 
During his time as a 4-H leader of the Deep River Busy Boys 4-H Club, he planned fun activities for the youth to Adventureland, baseball games, picnics, and hayrides.
He enjoyed assisting his children and grandchildren throughout their years in 4-H as well. In addition, Richard is willing to help anyone in need during the fair, regardless of whether he knew them or not.
One of the biggest task Richard volunteered to assist with, benefitting the 4-H program was constructing the new Poweshiek County Fair Buildings in 1986.
Richard and wife, Jenny (married in 1972), are the parents of five children, Tim (Beth) Cheney of Victor, Iowa, Michelle (Adam) Anton of Ottawa, Illinois, Kyle (Sierra) Cheney of Tiffin, Iowa, Sabrina (Joe) Peter of Sheffield, Iowa, and Jeff Cheney of Victor, Iowa. Richard has 10 grandchildren and they have continued participating in the 4-H programs.
