Franklin County 4-H volunteer, Carma DeVries, was a 4-H club member for nine years. After her years as a member and seeing the volunteers that helped her, she knew she would like to help others someday. The county fair was Carma’s favorite part of the summer and she could see it took many people to help make the fair run smoothly.
Carma’s first opportunity to become a 4-H volunteer was helping to teach dog obedience while she was a 4-H member. She continues in that role today. Soon after graduating, Carma saw the need of a horse, pony & mule project leader. Using the knowledge she learned through her own 4-H horse projects and through her work in the horse industry, Carma has been preparing youth to show at clinics held each year before the county fair. “I also love evaluating these project records every year to see what the kids have learned”, says Carma. She has been serving in these roles for the past 33 years.
Once her own son joined the Franklin XL’s 4-H Club, she found out the club was in need of new leaders. Carma has been a club leader for the past nine years, continuing after her son graduated. Carma says, “It takes many helping hands to have a 4-H program and the county fair is still a favorite part of my summer!”
Franklin County is pleased to have Carma DeVries as its 2018 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee.
