Bill’s first involvement in 4-H was as a parent after moving to Iowa in 2004. In 2005, he was contacted concerning the formation of a new shooting sports 4-H club in Floyd County. From that conversation he joined Sue Sedgwick as co-leader in the Floyd County Marksmen 4-H Club. Bill was a perfect fit for the job, combining his talents as a former teacher with his love of shooting sports. Bill helped shape the new club sharing his knowledge of rifle, archery, trap, muzzleloader, and wildlife. For the past thirteen years he has immersed himself in all aspects of the club: teaching, organizing practice shoots, purchasing ammunition, and advising youth members.
In addition to Bill’s club activities he is also on his eighth year of serving on the Floyd County Extension Council, and has also served on the 4-H Youth Committee. Several years ago Bill branched out to the state level by training and becoming a rifle and wildlife instructor to potential shooting sports 4-H leaders. Each year he attends sessions around the state instructing and encouraging the formation of new 4-H shooting sports groups. In May of 2018 he trained to become a National shooting sports instructor in the area of pistol instruction.
Along with his knowledge of shooting sports, Bill imparts his love and respect for the environment. As a teacher he earned a minor in Environmental Education studies. He is a member of the Floyd County Isaac Walton League and is a Master Conservationist.
He is always eager to volunteer his services, whether it be sitting at the desk at the Extension office, picking up trash along the roadways, volunteering and/or chaperoning at the regional 4-H outdoor camp or teaching school children environmental activities at special events. Bill also volunteers his time at the Floyd County Fossil Prairie Park and looks forward each summer to traveling around Iowa judging at 4-H fairs.
At the current time Bill continues all of his involvement, showing no signs of slowing down. Bill is a well-deserved inductee to the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.
