David and Carol Solberg have been lifelong volunteers for the Emmet County 4-H program. As youth they both participated in the 4-H program. Carol was a member of 4-H in Palo Alto County, where she enjoyed showing swine, creating home improvement and food & nutrition exhibits, and being active as a County Council member. One of her favorite memories was the year that she was the Pork Queen and got to hand out ribbons for the fair shows. David was active in the beef, sheep, and swine project areas while a member of Emmet County 4-H and the Denmark Dandies 4-H club. A favorite memory of his was when he was awarded Grand Champion Pen of 3 sheep, Grand Champion Individual Sheep, and Champion Senior Sheep Showman, all his senior year of 4-H. He still laughs about this being his way of “going out with a bang!”
Over the years, David and Carol have served as leaders of 4-H clubs, 4-H and Youth Committee members, chaperones for 4-H trips, and 4-H workshop & camp leaders. Carol has fond memories as a club leader of decorating store windows for National 4-H Week and doing community service projects with her 4-H club’s members.
They both enjoyed the years their now adult children were in 4-H, and all of the fun memories they have of their children participating in the county fair. A few of their favorite memories include seeing their son, Kyle, win Grand Champion Sheep with a lamb they raised from their own flock and when their daughter, Kelsey, won Grand Champion Market Beef at the county fair. They also recall the fun and craziness of the week before the fair and all the last minute preparations when the whole family pitched in to help.
David is currently a Sheep Committee member, Premium Livestock Auction Committee member, Fair Board member, Extension Council member, and Emmet County Shooting Sport club leader. Carol has been instrumental in beginning a new Emmet County 4-H “Cook This!” group. It was organized in 2014, and of Carol serves as one of the co-leaders.
Most of all, David and Carol agree the best part about their experiences with the 4-H program have been the great families they have met over the years and the friendships that have developed. They enjoy seeing these people and catching up each year at the county fair.
The Solbergs are always willing to lend a hand to help out with any 4-H activity or event to truly help “make the best better” for Emmet County youth! Congratulations to David and Carol for the many hours they have dedicated to 4-H and the many lives they have touched along the way!
