James R. GevockJim Gevock contributed for many years to the Jefferson County 4-H program through award presentation, volunteerism and encouragement of the youth. After serving 20 years as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corp, Jim retired to the Fairfield area with his wife Linda and began his contribution to the Jefferson County 4-H. He served as a Region 9 Director for Conservation Districts of Iowa and as a Commissioner for Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation Commission. During his tenure with these positions, Jim founded and promoted a Soil & Conservation Award to be presented to Jefferson County 4-H members. Not only did he promote this award, but he also came to the annual awards night to present the awards to the youth in person.

During this time, Jim became involved with the Jefferson County Fair Board to volunteer his time helping make a positive fair experience for the youth. For many years, Jim operated the Jefferson County Fair scale house. He would come to winter and spring weigh-ins as well as coming to the Jefferson County Fair to operate the scale house for fair check-in and weigh times.

Jim was dedicated even in his time of illness. Jim became ill after the April sheep and goat weigh-in. He was severely disappointed he was unable to help at the 2012 Jefferson County Fair, but he did come to check on us to make sure everything was going okay. We lost Jim on February 24, 2013.
