Dickinson County Extension and Outreach is proud to nominate VerDon & Donna Schmidt to the 2013 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. The couple resides on the Schmidt family farm north of Everly, Iowa. Because of their close proximity with Dickinson and Clay Counties in Northwest Iowa, they have contributed to 4-H and youth development in both counties.
Donna and VerDon were first involved in 4-H as youth. Donna was an eight-year 4-H member in Dickinson County and served on the county youth council. VerDon was a 4-H member in Clay County for seven years and completed his eighth year of 4-H in Dickinson County. He too shared his leadership skills at a county level by serving on the Dickinson County Youth Council.
As 4-H alumni, the couple continues their commitment to support 4-H in Dickinson and Clay Counties. Donna volunteers on a creative culinary committee at the Clay County Fair. VerDon can be seen as a Dickinson County 4-H volunteer helping at the scale at beef weigh-ins in the middle of December. He is also heard as a familiar voice at the fair announcing everything from the pet show to the queen coronation to the livestock auction. Both Donna and VerDon have also been members of 4-H Youth Advisory Committees.
VerDon served as an elected official on the Dickinson County Extension Council for twelve years, the Dickinson County Fair Board for four years, and the Clay County Fair Board for fourteen years. His leadership abilities and continued commitment to the 4-H Program are exemplary. VerDon’s civic engagement at the county, regional, and state level is exemplified in his willingness to volunteer and advocate for 4-H. He has attended several legislative days at the State Capitol on behalf of ISU Extension and 4-H and helps make a difference for the 4-H program in Iowa.
With great pleasure, we nominate Donna and VerDon Schmidt to the 2013 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame
