Lendall & Fern Schievelbein have been dedicated and involved in 4-H for more than 70 years. Fern (Marting) Schievelbein was a member of the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club from 1940 - 1947 in Clayton County. Lendall and Fern became very involved with the 4-H program when their two daughters, Monica and Jeanne joined the same Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. Both daughters were very active in their 4-H programs; County Council, Citizenship- Washington Focus trip, exchange trips, state fair exhibits, presentations and showing beef, horses and sewing exhibits.
Fern served as 4-H leader for the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club from 1965-1969. She helped getting all the members involved in the achievement shows and promoted fund raisers for educational club tours to nearby states with historical sites. She also judged several achievement shows in the county. Fern taught sewing classes for 10 years through the Clayton County 4-H Extension office with Home Economist Evelyn Thiele and Jane Blumhagen.
Lendall served on the Clayton County Extension Council for 4 years, 1964-1968 and served as Clayton County Beef Superintendent for the 4-H beef show at the county fair over 40 years. He was active checking cattle in at the fair and always there to lend a helping hand to a 4-H’er.
Lendall and Fern chaperoned the Massachusetts 4-H Exchange trip in 1967 that included the World’s Fair. This is still one of their life’s highlights and are so proud of all the 4-Hers that participated on the trip…including the stories still being told!
Lendall and Fern have farmed near Farmersburg their entire life with a livestock operation, and sold seed corn for 35 years. Lendall was a lifetime member of the Angus Association and served as director and chairman for NE Angus Association. They raised quarter horses and were members of the Whistlin Bit Saddle Club for 35 years. Fern enjoyed sewing clothes, quilts and wall hangings for her family and worked at Monona Wire Corporation for 11 years.
Lendall and Fern are lifetime members of St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg and have served several terms on church council over the years.
Lendall & Fern have supported their three grandchildren through their entire 4-H years and now enjoy their great-grandchildren exhibiting beef and other exhibits at the Clayton County Fair. It is guaranteed you will see both Lendall and Fern around the fairgrounds every day during the Clayton County Fair.
