Darlene Conrad began her 4-H career as a member of the Graf Go-Getters and later the Peosta Peppy Pals in Dubuque County. Her main project areas were food and nutrition, clothing, home improvement, and horticulture. She was 4-H club president and also elected Dubuque County 4-H Girl’s President. A highlight of being 4-H Girl's President was representing Dubuque County at the Iowa 4-H Conference at Iowa State University in Ames.
Darlene and Bill Conrad have four children Darla, Debbie, Dennis and Duane. When Darla was old enough for 4-H, Darlene contacted the Extension Office in April and they told her if she could get 8 youth as members enrolled by May 1st they could be part of the Dubuque County Fair. The Placid Pepper Uppers started and continues today with Darlene serving as an assistant leader. All four of the children were members of the Placid Pepper Uppers and 8 grandchildren were active in Dubuque County 4-H.
Some of the highlights over the years were the club representing Dubuque County at the Iowa State Fair for Share the Fun and club members with presentations. The club’s service projects included visiting nursing homes and helping make holiday decorations, clean-up projects, and planting flowers at church.
The Placid Pepper Uppers leaders and 4-H’ers surprised Darlene with a special celebration of her 40 years as a 4-H Leader. There were over 125 current and former 4-H’’ers that gave her a special thanks for her service with the Dubuque County 4-H. Many 4-H'ers have come back to share what they achieved because of what they learned from Darlene through 4-H.
Darlene was active in Dubuque County 4-H serving on the Junior Day Camp Committee, Gardening Project Leader, and County Project Day Helper. She chaperoned two intermediate area camps.
Darlene continues to judge county fair and local achievement shows. She judges photography, visual arts, home improvement, and ag and natural resources.
