Tom Beavers was a ten year member of the Valley Boosters 4-H Club with a sheep herd as his major project. He also had field crops, swine and cattle as minor ones.
He held every office in the local club and ran for county office. He exhibited the Grand Champion Ram at the Page County Fair in 1951. His record book was chosen for state competition his last two years.
In 1960 Beavers joined the KMA Radio station as assistant farm director and in the early years had the opportunity to interview Jesse Field Shambaugh, the Mother of 4-H in Page County. These interviews were aired on KMA during the 100th year celebration of 4-H in Page County in 2001. Beavers served on the organizational committee to start the Page County Endowment Fund and has served as chairman since 2003. The foundation has been very successful.
His years of KMA broadcasting has allowed him to be a spokesperson for 4-H in the area. He has interviewed countless 4-H members and leaders and has originated live broadcasts from 12 County Fairs as well as the Iowa State Fair. He has interviewed state winners at the 4-H building on the state fairgrounds. Beavers has spoken at area meetings, service organizations, and has emceed many programs in SW Iowa.
Beavers was asked to serve on the State 4-H Foundation Board in 1989 and served until 1994. He provides programs to groups in the county urging participation in the 4-H 400 program.
Tom has received many state and national awards from all the livestock and commodity groups, the State and National Farm-City Councils and is a member Emeritus of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters.
