Donald Felton, 78, and the late Flora Felton of Neola have been involved with the 4-H program for most of their lives.
Don started his 4-H career at age 12 and has been involved ever since, except
for two years when he was serving his country overseas. His projects included
market and breeding beef and swine. Don exhibited projects at local achievement shows, several county fairs in the area, the Iowa and Nebraska State Fairs, and the AKSARBEN livestock exhibition. He also took cattle to the National Western Stock
Show in Denver.
Both Don and Flora became very involved as leaders of the boys and girls clubs in
Neola from 1956 until sometime in the late 80s. The Felton family has served as a
host family for the 4-H Youth Exchange program. Mentoring youth has always been an important part of their lives— that included helping, teaching and encouraging all
four of their children who were involved in 4-H.
Flora spent many hours teaching young ladies how to sew, cook, bake, set goals, complete record books and many other invaluable life skills. She judged at East Pottawattamie, West Pottawattamie and Harrison County Fairs for countless years.
Flora hand-lettered all of the signs and stall cards for the county fair for many years. She was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau Women and was very involved in the food stand at the county fair, too. Flora was known as a “go-to-gal,” whenever anything
was needed she was up for the job. The 4-H pledge was the code she lived life by.
Don taught many young 4-Hers how to select, feed, break to lead, clip and show livestock projects, among other things. He was also involved in training youth how
to judge livestock. The Felton family hosted many clinics over the years.
Don continues to be involved with the livestock sale committee, and has been on the West Pottawattamie County Fair Board. In the past he was very involved in helping plan, buildand relocate the West Pottawattamie County Fair from Playland Park to
the new Westfair grounds.
Don was inducted into the Westfair Hall of Fame in the late 90s. He continues to
servewhenever possible because America’s youth and the Iowa 4-H program have
always been important to both Don and Flora.
