Marilyn Preston Hilleman began her 4-H career as a member of the Marshall County 4-H club the Logan-Go-Get-It’s at Van Cleve in the 1940’s. She enjoyed projects in gardening, sewing, and furniture refinishing. She was a member for seven years and held several offices including historian, which helped form her lifelong hobby of scrapbooking.
Marilyn became active as an adult leader when her own children became 4-H members. In 1964 she began volunteering as a home economics leader for the State Center Cloverettes and the State Center Clever Clovers. For ten years she taught 4-H’ers to have self confidence and to speak clearly, while offering specific teaching in all aspects of home economics.
Marilyn became active on the county level as a member of the 4-H Youth Committee, judging achievement shows and assisting with county fair judging.
She began working as a 4-H program assistant at the Marshall County Extension Office in 1983 and retired in 1994. In 1998 Marilyn was inducted into the Central Iowa Fair Hall of Fame All of her five children and nine of her grandchildren participated in 4-H, holding club offices and participating at the county and the state levels.
