He served as 4-H Livestock Judging Team coach for 8 years, and have continued for 11 years serving as agriculture and natural resources judge and ultrasound contest superintendent at the county fair.
Ron has served 7 years as Van Buren County Livestock Quiz Bowl coach, winning third place in the state competition in 2001, 1st in 2002, 2nd in 2003, 1st in 2004, 1st in 2005, and 1st place in 2006, and 2007. The past 6 years our team has participated in the Regional Quiz Bowl Competition at the AK-SAR-BEN Livestock Exposition. He has assisted with the 4-H/FFA sheep, beef, and swine weigh-ins for Van Buren County for 11 years.
Ron has served 7 years on the Van Buren County Extension Council, three years as Southeast Iowa Representative on the Citizens for Extension Council. Other leadership experiences include serving as Chair for the Citizens for Extension Referendum Committee in 2004.
He is a retired Vocational Agriculture Instructor, serving as an instructor at Spencer Community Schools for 20 years, at Fox Valley Schools for 7 years, and other schools for a total teaching career of 39 years.
Currently he serves on the Van Buren County on the SENECA Area Agency on Aging and is serving on the county and area board. He serves as chairperson of the Southeast Iowa Single Group. He was very active in the Iowa State Education Association. He is a life member and served as the Northwest Iowa Uniserve President. He has served as President of the Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association.
He is very interested in promoting International Agriculture Studies and numerous trips behind the Iron Curtain. In 1963, he provided leadership and took 31 FFA students and chaperons on this 30-day trip. The trip traveled through 10 different European countries and spent 8 days in Communist countries.
