Dan Voigt of Graettinger, IA, a Palo Alto County 4-H alumnus, has been very generous with his time and talents for Palo Alto County Extension. Because of his job with the local newspaper, he gives us great media coverage, many times with colored pictures on the front page. He covers everything from 4-H activities and events such as the county fair and our annual 4-H awards banquet to Extension happenings and programs. He has been a very active member of the Palo Alto County Fair Board since 1998. Kids are his thing. He is always asking, “What’s best for the kids and what will help to make a more memorable experience for them?” He’s the sound expert that makes everything from the livestock shows to all the fair entertainment special. He will take off a Sunday to help with Pedal With Pete, a bike ride for cerebral palsy, or stay up most of the night for a 4-H Lock-In. During the fair he performs the duties of newspaper reporter, M.C., sound technician, and chaperone. He spends countless hours at the fair, making himself available to do what needs to be done. Dan has been doing this for us as long as any of the extension staff can remember and continues to make his presence known today. He has also visited 4-H clubs and used his photography skills to teach numerous 4-H club members the art of good picture-taking.
Because of Dan’s media coverage Palo Alto County residents are very aware of ISU Extension and its purpose in the community. He is one of our best marketing tools that we have. He has used his promotional skills to let anyone who will listen know what a solid influence Extension is in the lives of the area residents. His articles with pictures have attracted the attentions of many and have brought many new faces to our office. His coverage of 4-H events has raised interest in the 4-H program not only from parents but also from young readers. His articles encouraged youth to get involved. His drive and willingness to be a part of a team has made it possible to keep many activities and events happening. Without his personal interest and volunteerism the Palo Alto 4-H program would not be the same.
