Darlene and Tom MartinTom and Darlene Martin have been 4-H leaders in the 4-H horse program for a combined 47 years - Tom for 18 years until his death in 2001 and Darlene continues to be a leader after already serving 29 years in that capacity.  In 1997, two dreams were realized when they successfully combined the two horse clubs in Muscatine County into one and worked to establish a permanent horse arena on the fairgrounds.

Tom was passionate about establishing the arena and coordinated many volunteers to accomplish that task.  After his passing, the arena has been named in his honor.  The couple has also established monthly horse shows throughout the spring and summer and invited 4-H/FFA youth from other counties so that all youth could have a chance to practice their horsemanship skills.

Darlene has been a tireless volunteer of the 4-H program, serving on several committees beyond her club responsibilities, including Extension Council and the Program Development Committee.  She has also been a big supporter of 4-H by having her club members write letters to the newspaper during National 4-H Week in addition to securing a spot on the local cable station and having her club members bring their exhibits and talk about them during National 4-H Week.

Throughout their time with 4-H, their number one priority has always what is best for the kids.  That caring attitude is reflected back to them through the youth they have touched over the years.
