The Allamakee County 4-H & Youth Committee are proud to recognize Bob & Bernie Heffern the 2007 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductees from Allamakee County. The Hefferns have exhibited life-long service to the Iowa 4-H program.
Bernie became a member of the French Creek Farmerettes in 1949. Later Bob and Bernie had all nine of their children in 4-H and were club leaders during that time. The Hefferns were leaders during the 1970s, with Bob leading his boys’ group – the Cherry Mound Chargers and Bernie leading the girls’ club –the Taylor Starlettes. Bob was a leader for about six years and Bernie for 14 years. Bernie found that by being a leader she learned that the “most important thing for kids was parental involvement.”
The Heffern’s strong 4-H tradition continues with their grandchildren. The Hefferns are regular participants at county 4-H programs and events. The Hefferns are thankful for what 4-H has given to their family. “I think 4-H really helped our kids through life,” says Bernie. “The good and the bad.”
