Don retired from Extension in May 2001 after 40 years with ISU Extension Service. Don was County Extension Director in Howard County for 22 years, Mahaska County for 11 years and Allamakee county for 4 years. Don believes in the values of the 4-H program and modeled them in his daily life. Don is an advocate of youth-adult partnerships and made sure the 4-H & Youth Committee worked as just that. Don chose to be involved with youth programming and he built relationships with family’s through 4-H in Howard County.
Don served on various boards including Kiwanis, Rotary, Ruritan, Toastmaster and JC’s, Decorah City Councilman, Past chair of Economic Development committee and Past chair of the public safety committee as well as serving on the city council budget, streets, personnel and property committees. He is a charter member and past president of the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation. He is currently Mayor of Decorah, Iowa. Don is also in numerous other activities that have kept in active in his community.
