Verna was a Polk County 4-H member for 8 years in the Beaverettes and Beaver Hustlers 4-H Clubs. She served as the Polk County 4-H Vice President in 1960-1961. As an adult and parent, Verna was the leader of the Camp Farmerettes Junior Club and served as Superintendent for Polk County Photography Department – organizing numerous workshops.
Verna and her husband, John, provided opportunities for teenage 4-H members to show livestock at the Chicago International. Verna helped individual 4-H’ers with projects in woodworking, personal development, visual arts, photography, beef, and sheep projects.
Verna continues to volunteer in several capacities including assisting the beef superintendent at the Polk County Fair and superintending several exhibit building departments, served on the Polk County Fair Board, judged at county fairs, judged record books and speeches, evaluated county and area awards, and now a grandparent of Polk County 4-H’ers. Verna is a very valuable volunteer to Polk County and deserving of this special honor.
