2005 Lucas County - Don & Marge McFarlandDon McFarland and his wife Marge have been active in Lucas County 4-H since the early 1940’s.  Don started out as a 4-H member in 1941.  He showed primarily beef.  After returning from World War II and marrying his wife Marge, Don became Don Willis’ co-leader in 1953 of the Whitebreast Sodbusters.  He has continued to be a leader, helping Lucas County 4-H’ers for 43 years.  He most recently was a co-leader with Ron Burgett of the Liberty Flyers, which we believe is a club Don helped form in the early 1960’s.

Marge, who enrolled in 4-H in 1943, has always been right by Don’s side, helping him with his leader duties and volunteering to help wherever it was needed.  One year Don and Marge started making candy for their 4-H club members at Christmas.  They continue to do this every year and the members greatly appreciate their generosity.

Even though Don showed beef as a 4-H’er, he and Marge are great supporters of the sheep program, as that is what most of their club members exhibited.  They have been known to stay overnight watching animals on the fairgrounds while cooking meat in the pit for the Food Stand, being a Host/Hostess in the 4-H Exhibit Building, and helping with shows among many other projects and activities.
