Arnie Hanson, of rural Parnell, began his career in 4-H with the Parnell Peppers of Iowa County at the age ten. He was an active club member until the age of 21 but also was a club leader beginning at age 18. He continued to volunteer for 25 years as the Parnell Peppers leader to youth mostly from Filmore and Greene townships from 1958 to 1983. Cattle and sheep were his favorite project areas. Showing cattle at the Iowa State Fair holds many fond memories.
Arnie always looked forward to leading the annual club tour every summer to all his member’s homes to see their projects. Parents were ready and waiting with their 8mm cameras to shoot the big club tour when it stopped at their farm. Arnie was also involved in serving as a chaperone for county trips to Chicago and St. Louis. All five of his children were also 4-H members. Arnie received the Iowa County Honorary member in 1992. When asked what is the most significant thing he gained from 4-H, Arnie would no doubt say that it would be the life-long friendships he has made.
