Clarence Smith Jr. grew up on a livestock farm in Dale Township of O’Brien County. He began his 4-H club membership at age 10 and continued to graduation from high school with many beef cattle as well as other projects which were exhibited in O’Brien County. He was on the O’Brien County Fair Board for over twenty years beginning in 1947 serving several of these years as President.
Clarence and his wife had eleven children who were all very active in 4-H from about 1950 to 1977. He was a leader of the Center Farmers 4-H Club for many of these years. He generously volunteered his time and talent to assist not only his own children but all the 4-H Club members. He coached and took 4-H livestock judging teams to contests over a wide area for many years.
O’Brien County is pleased to highly recommend Clarence as a very worthy and deserving inductee the 2004 4-H Iowa Hall of Fame.
