Gerry and Arno Asmussen’s contributions to the Mills County 4-H program have spanned 50 years. After helping their three children in 4-H, they assisted grandchildren in getting started in 4-H projects. Both Arno and Gerry often chaperoned 4-H’ers at camps and fairs, and hosted visiting 4-H’ers from other states.
Gerry was a club leader for 11 years, receiving the Honorary 4-H Member and Outstanding Alumni awards. She enjoyed teaching skills to 4-H’ers, often having sewing, cooking and furniture refinishing workshops. After Arno’s death, Gerry purchased new pens for the county fair sheep barn and continues to give trophies to sheep exhibitors each year in Arno’s memory. This is Gerry’s 50th year attending the Mills County Fair, having never missed a year since 1955.
Arno was Fair Board treasurer, superintendent of the county fair sheep department, and was just finishing his 26th year as a club leader at the time of his death in 1982. He was chosen to receive the Honorary 4-H member, Outstanding Alumni, and Outstanding Leader awards, but his greatest reward was working with the 4-H kids.
Mills County is proud to have Gerry and Arno Asmussen inducted into the 2004 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame.
